Revolutionizing Representation: Sisters360 Set to Inspire Audiences in Slough

A new family theatre production is set to make waves in Slough, capturing the essence of resilience and sisterhood through an inspiring narrative. Titled Sisters360, this production takes the stage on April 2 at The Curve and aims to challenge stereotypes while celebrating the diverse world of skateboarding.

Breaking Stereotypes Through Skateboarding

Written by award-winning playwright Asif Khan, Sisters360 is based on the real-life experiences of three Muslim sisters from Hull known as the "Hijabi Sisters." The play follows step-sisters Fatima and Salima as they navigate family life while striving to win a national skateboarding competition. This high-energy production showcases their journey in a humorous and uplifting manner, aimed at captivating family audiences.

The inclusion of live skateboarding on stage not only adds excitement to the performance but also serves as a metaphor for the girls' determination to overcome obstacles. The show discusses central themes of identity, ambition, and belonging, providing vital representation of hijab-wearing girls as they emerge as confident role models.

Addressing Representation in Children's Theatre

Asif Khan, inspired by his childhood experiences growing up without seeing relatable characters in media, aimed to change this landscape. He expressed, "As a parent, I worry about the challenges our children face...there is a lack of stories for children involving British Muslim characters." His mission to foster representation in children's theatre directly influenced the narrative of Sisters360.

This production, co-developed by Polka Theatre, Turtle Key Arts, and AIK Productions in association with Leeds Playhouse, reflects a significant step towards inclusivity and diversity in theatrical storytelling. By placing hijab-wearing girls at the forefront of the narrative, it empowers a new generation to see themselves as both aspirational and capable.
