Revolutionizing Shipping: The Port of Barcelona Welcomes Cutting-Edge Cranes

The Port of Barcelona recently celebrated a significant milestone with the arrival of two new state-of-the-art cranes at Hutchison Ports' semi-automated terminal, BEST. This event marks the completion of the initial phase of a transformative project that underscores Barcelona's commitment to becoming a global logistics hub.

An Investment in Innovation

Totaling an impressive investment of 130 million euros, the project does not stop here. Hutchison Ports plans to allocate an additional 140 million euros over the next two years, which includes the installation of three more cranes by 2028. This expansion will enhance the terminal’s capabilities and efficiency in container handling, crucial in an era marked by larger vessels and increased international trade demands.

World-Class Technology

Manufactured in China, the new Ship-to-Shore cranes are the largest of their kind, allowing for operations with vessels that can handle up to 26 rows of containers and standing 55 meters tall. Their advanced, goose neck design significantly boosts efficiency, productivity, and flexibility for loading and unloading operations, which is vital for meeting the evolving needs of global shipping.

A Vision for Sustainable Growth

During the inauguration, various esteemed authorities, including the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and the President of the Port of Barcelona, highlighted the strategic importance of this investment. With almost 1,700 million euros dedicated to projects in the Port, there is a strong emphasis on enhancing both land and maritime connectivity to foster economic growth.

Strengthening Barcelona's Logistics Status

The addition of these cranes not only raises BEST's capacity to 15 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes but also reinforces Barcelona's position as a premier logistics hub in southern Europe. With more than thirty weekly connections to major ports worldwide, the terminal continues to provide innovative solutions for shipping companies and logistics operators.
