Solent University Student Shines a Light on Care Leavers with Compelling Film

A remarkable initiative at Solent University is gaining momentum as Teo Smith, a dedicated student, collaborates with the charity Step by Step to share the heartfelt stories of young individuals transitioning out of the care system. This project not only aims to spotlight their experiences but also advocates for improved financial support for care leavers.

Teo Smith, a BA (Hons) Television Production student, has been instrumental in producing a film that captures the realities faced by care leavers across the south of England. Partnering with Step by Step’s creative agency, Solent Creatives, Smith's work revolves around the impactful narrative of "18 Isn’t Cheaper," a campaign underscoring the loss of financial support when these young individuals turn 18.

A Collaborative Effort

Nic Goom, head of strategic marketing and external affairs at Step by Step, praised the collaboration, noting how the partnership has brought authenticity and a deeper understanding to the project. He remarked on the strength and honesty of the film, which was shaped by the lived experiences of the care leavers and highlighted the professionalism demonstrated by Smith and his team.
