Somerset Day Festival Brings Joy and Community Spirit to Taunton
The annual Somerset Day eat Festival in Taunton was a resounding success this year, with a notable 6.4% increase in visitors. Residents and tourists alike celebrated the rich heritage and vibrant local community of Somerset, with a diverse array of vendors and artisans showcasing their products.
A Celebration of Local Artisans
This year’s festival featured over 100 vendors from across the South West, offering everything from artisanal food to handmade crafts. The atmosphere was electric, with attendees enjoying the opportunity to support local businesses, connect with producers, and indulge in delicious fare. Stallholder Mike Cook from Mike's Patisserie shared his excitement, stating, “I'm feeling good and excited, there are lots of people, it's a nice day. Happy Somerset Day.”
Community Connection
Many stallholders echoed Cook’s sentiments, expressing joy in engaging with the community. Adam Robbins and Neil Milton from Milton & Chambers remarked on the pleasure of meeting locals and promoting their bespoke produce. Russell Smith of Somerset Charcuterie emphasized the festival's importance in bringing people together to appreciate the region's culinary offerings, stating, “It's lovely, eat Festivals are always great because they bring local people and producers together.”
Pride in Local Heritage
As visitors explored the festival, they were reminded of the historical significance of Somerset Day, which commemorates Alfred the Great’s rallying of the people against Viking invaders. The celebratory spirit was palpable, with Lynne O'Halloran of Lux Lollies noting, “It's so wonderful to see so many people out enjoying the festival.”
In addition to the vibrant atmosphere, the festival provided a platform for local producers like Francine Lee of Bublee’s Preserves, who expressed pride in supporting the county. Lee remarked, “It's amazing. We’ve supported it from the very beginning, and it’s nice to support our county. We are often overlooked, but we are an amazing place.”
