St. Charles Health System Awards Over $240,000 to Transform Lives in Central Oregon

In a remarkable display of community support, St. Charles Health System has awarded more than $240,000 in Community Benefit grants to 45 local organizations across Central Oregon. This initiative aims to address pressing community needs by funding programs focused on providing healthy, affordable food and enhancing social connections to alleviate loneliness.

Meeting Increasing Demand

The significant funding allocation underscores the increasing demand within the community, as over 90 organizations submitted applications for these grants this year—a notable rise compared to previous years. Carlos Salcedo, manager of Community Partnerships at St. Charles Health System, expressed pride in supporting vital community efforts. He noted, "The need in our community seems to be growing, as more than 90 organizations applied for grant funding, which is a fairly significant increase from what we have seen in years past."

Highlighting Local Impact

Among the recipients, Open Door Ministries stands out, having received a $5,000 grant aimed at providing essential services to individuals experiencing poverty or homelessness. Affiliated with the Bend Methodist Church, Open Door Ministries offers free clothing, hygiene items, food, and financial assistance to families in need. The organization also maintains a mailroom for individuals without permanent addresses, serving more than 200 Central Oregonians who rely on these crucial services.

A Commitment to Service

Chuck Hemingway, a representative from Open Door Ministries, emphasized the organization's dedication to helping marginalized individuals: "Our roots are in helping marginalized people. It's who we are. We are thrilled to receive this grant. We will be good stewards of the funding and will put it to good use."

Volunteers Making a Difference

Charlotte Hartman, a dedicated volunteer with nearly 40 years of service at Open Door Ministries, shared her motivations for volunteering: "I've worked here almost 40 years. I do it because you just look around and see the need. It's huge. It makes me feel good and hopefully it touches someone's life in a positive way."

The grants awarded by St. Charles are not just financial support; they symbolize a collective effort to uplift the community and address fundamental needs. As the largest employer in Central Oregon, St. Charles Health System continues to play a crucial role in fostering health and wellness throughout the region.
