A northern academy trust is shining a light on the commendable efforts of its students who are making a significant impact in their communities through a dedicated social action programme. Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT) has released its Out There Impact Report, showcasing the remarkable contributions of these young changemakers and the tangible results of their hard work.

Launched in April 2025, the 'Out There' programme was created in response to student feedback, emphasizing the crucial role young people can play in societal transformation. Julie Slater, chief executive principal at OGAT, expressed her pride in the students, noting that they are not only developing vital skills but are also stepping out of their comfort zones to make a real difference in the lives of others.
The Power of Community Projects
Over the summer, students dedicated thousands of hours to over 100 community projects covering six key themes: building relationships, sustainability, enhancing community wellbeing, fostering inclusivity, safety improvements, and innovation. From revitalizing green spaces to volunteering in food banks and hosting intergenerational events in care homes, these initiatives are a testament to the students' commitment to their communities.
A Lasting Impact on Young Lives
The impact of this programme extends beyond community service. The report highlighted that more than 60% of participating students were motivated by the desire to help others, with many expressing a wish to change the societal perception of youth. As one group stated, their work was aimed at uplifting older individuals who may feel isolated, demonstrating a deep empathy and responsibility towards those around them.

The success of the 'Out There' programme has not gone unnoticed, with OGAT planning to expand its reach in 2026 to engage 20,000 students and initiate over 5,000 projects. The recognition received, including the Community Impact Award at the 2025 Connect Yorkshire Business Awards, reflects the powerful positive change these young individuals are bringing about.
