The Remarkable Rescue: Beluga Whales Begin New Chapter at Shedd Aquarium

In a significant win for animal welfare, a major logistical operation has successfully transferred four beluga whales from a closed theme park in Ontario to their new home at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. This carefully orchestrated move marks a hopeful turning point for these marine mammals, who have faced a challenging past in captivity.

Safe Arrival Amidst Challenges

The whales were transported from Marineland in Ontario, which has been the subject of extensive abuse allegations, to ensure their care and well-being. Utilizing a specialized transfer method, these belugas were safely moved using cloth gurneys and cranes before being loaded onto a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 cargo plane. Upon arrival at O’Hare International Airport, they were quickly taken to the Abbott Oceanarium at Shedd for health evaluations and acclimatization.

A Bright Future Ahead

Dr. Karisa Tang, lead veterinarian and vice president of animal health at Shedd, expressed optimism about this transition. With dedicated care and veterinary support, the focus is now on helping these belugas adjust to their new environment. “We are watching closely for the rescued belugas to eat a full diet, socialize with one another, and investigate the habitat,” stated Charlie Jacobsma, director of animal behavior and training at Shedd.

Next Steps in the Rescue Effort

The efforts to relocate additional belugas are already underway, with plans approved for moving a total of 28 animals to four different aquariums across the United States. The commitment by the NOAA and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada showcases significant progress in animal conservation and welfare.
