This Community Initiative is Transforming Newcastle, One Litter-Pick at a Time!

A group of Kurdish volunteers in Newcastle is making waves in their community as they come together to give back, driven by gratitude for the warm welcome they have received. Under the leadership of Sabir Khalid, the group, known as Kurdish House, has been diligently litter-picking in the city's West End for several months. This effort not only aims to beautify the area but also fosters a sense of belonging and community spirit among participants.

A Growing Movement

Initially starting with just 16 members, Kurdish House has rapidly expanded, boasting nearly 100 active participants today. The growing involvement is mainly attributed to the positive reaction from the community, stimulating word-of-mouth growth aided by social media outreach. As Khalid noted, “It has been really positive, so I think we made the right decision to start all of this off.” Volunteers gather on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with city council support on Wednesday, showing the successful collaboration between the volunteers and local authorities.

Making a Real Impact

The initiative has proven to be more than just a litter-picking exercise. It has connected the volunteers, including asylum seekers and socially isolated individuals, creating a supportive network. “We have had asylum seekers who are isolated and living alone away from their families who have come to be a part of this, and have felt much happier,” explains Khalid. Such engagement illustrates how community service can enhance mental well-being, combat loneliness, and promote inclusivity.

Looking Ahead

With aspirations to reach 150 members soon, Kurdish House emphasizes the importance of collective effort in improving Newcastle's environment. Khalid expresses his hope: “If we can continue to do our bit to make such a wonderful city into an even better place then that is exactly what we will do.” This initiative stands as a testimony to how grassroots movements can effect change and promote unity, highlighting the power of community-driven efforts in addressing both environmental and social issues.
