This Innovative Program is Transforming Veterans' Lives!

The Armed Forces Equine Charity (AFEC) has recently made headlines with their successful Veterans Active Recovery Programme (VARP), developed in partnership with HorseBack UK at the Shrivenham Equestrian Centre. Over three transformative days, veterans from various branches of the Armed Forces gathered to engage in activities designed to promote mental health and wellbeing.

A Unique Approach to Healing

The programme focused on innovative methods to manage stress and anxiety, specifically tailored to the needs of each participant. With sessions exploring different wellbeing themes, participants took part in groundwork-based Equine Assisted Services (EAS) which reinforced the learning experience through interaction with horses. This connection is pivotal; research indicates that interactions with horses can significantly enhance an individual's overall wellbeing.

Tools for Lasting Change

Each day of the programme featured practical activities such as breathwork exercises, mindfulness-based archery, and wellbeing walks that encouraged participants to remain present and engaged with their surroundings. These techniques not only provided immediate benefits during the programme but also equipped veterans with tools they can utilize long after the sessions ended. The intent was clear: recovery doesn't stop when the programme concludes.

Building Bridges to Continued Support

The programme also provided avenues for ongoing support. AFEC’s Health and Wellbeing Lead connected participants with numerous partner charities and organizations, ensuring that the veterans left with clear pathways for support as they continue their recovery journeys. This aspect of the programme was well-received, highlighting the importance of community in the healing process.

Voices of Experience

Feedback from participants illustrated the profound impact of the VARP. One veteran shared, “I found reconnecting with humans and horses... It’s given me hope and confidence to take more care of myself.” Another noted the incredible support from instructors and fellow participants, stating, “I was very nervous... but felt very lucky I was with such a supportive group of people.” Such sentiments underscore the vital role that camaraderie and connection play in recovery.

A Bright Future for Veterans

As the programme concluded, many veterans expressed a desire to continue engaging in therapeutic activities involving horses – a testament to the lasting impact of this initiative. The combined strength of AFEC, HorseBack UK, and a network of veteran-focused organizations ensures that those who participated leave not only with positive experiences but with practical strategies for ongoing wellbeing.

This initiative is not just about healing; it's about rebuilding lives and fostering community among those who have served. As the veterans embark on their personal journeys of recovery, the insights gained from the VARP are likely to resonate far beyond the three-day engagement.
