This Summer Programme is Transforming Young Lives for the Better!
A transformative summer programme aimed at empowering school leavers has achieved remarkable success, with every participant transitioning into a positive future. The Moray Pathways Local Employability Partnership Summer Programme supported a cohort of 21 young individuals aged between 15 and 18 from schools across Moray, providing them with the tools and opportunities necessary to thrive as they embark on their next chapter.
A Multi-Faceted Approach to Development
Conducted over six weeks at UHI Moray, this initiative was a collaborative effort involving Moray Council’s Employability Youth Work Team, Mentoring Young Talent Team, Developing the Young Workforce Moray, UHI Moray, and Skills Development Scotland. The comprehensive programme offered participants a variety of activities designed to bolster confidence, develop essential skills, and stimulate interest in future opportunities.
Engagement was multifaceted, including circus skills workshops with Moray Flying Circus, workplace visits to local enterprises like Forres Tolbooth and ReBOOT, and a trip to the STEM Starts Centre at Elgin Library. The programme also incorporated sports, arts, and team-building exercises to ensure a well-rounded experience.
Empowering Youth Voices
A particularly noteworthy aspect of the programme was the 'youth voice day', where participants collaborated to draft manifestos detailing their aspirations and suggestions for improving their community. This initiative not only prompted valuable feedback but also fostered a sense of ownership and involvement in the future decisions that will affect them.
Participants Reflect on Their Journey
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Isla, an 18-year-old participant, shared, "It's an amazing and worth doing experience. It gave me the opportunity to do some things I've never done before and make new friends or see old friends again. I would very much recommend it to others!"
A Call for Continued Support
Councillor Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council's Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, praised the programme, stating, “This programme demonstrates the value of investing in our young people and giving them the support they need at a crucial stage in their lives.” Furthermore, Councillor Kathleen Robertson emphasized the importance of providing a nurturing environment that allows young individuals to explore potential pathways, build connections, and express their views effectively.
