Victoria Ford, a recent fashion and design graduate, has stepped in to help the shop, which was overwhelmed with donated clothing, by transforming unwanted items into bespoke fashion pieces.
From Piled Rags to Fashion Statements
The thrift shop, which benefits Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley, had become a repository for unwanted clothes, accumulating “eyewatering amounts” of garments that often went unsold. Rather than letting this excess end up in landfills, Ford saw an opportunity to give these items a second life. “Rather than letting things go to waste, I wanted to help Derian House to give their unsellable clothing a new life, and to turn them into something others can enjoy,” Ford stated.
Attracting New Customers
The efforts of Ford have not only rejuvenated the physical space of the thrift shop but have also attracted a new clientele. Mick Croskery, a representative from Derian House, noted that Victoria’s creative collections have drawn in customers who might not have previously visited the shop. With many donated items too damaged for resale, Ford’s initiative has provided the shop with a means to repurpose these materials into marketable products.

Derian House Children’s Hospice plays a critical role in caring for over 400 children and their families, providing essential services that cost approximately £6 million annually. The support generated through the thrift shop is vital for sustaining these operations.
