Transforming Communities: A North East Housing Development Wins National Recognition

A remarkable achievement has been recognized in the North East as the Benwell Dene housing development in Newcastle was awarded the title of "Most Improved Winner" at the 2026 Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards. This accolade highlights the efforts of Lovell, the construction partner, in establishing a meaningful connection with the surrounding community.

A Commitment to Being Good Neighbours

The awards ceremony emphasized not only the quality of construction but the importance of being a responsible and caring presence in the community. Darren Glennie, head of construction for Lovell in the North East, expressed their vision: “Earning our place as a true part of the community has been a priority from the outset.” This commitment has resulted in tangible benefits for the local residents in Newcastle’s West End.

Engaging with the Community

One of the most heartwarming initiatives has been the partnership developed with Bridgewater School, where children were taught the importance of safety around construction sites. This program allowed students to engage creatively by designing safety posters for the site, blending education and safety in an innovative manner.

Support for Health and Well-being

Moreover, Lovell has collaborated with Healthworks, a charitable organization focused on enhancing health across the North East. In a generous move, they transformed the garden at The Lemington Centre, creating a more inviting environment for the community. Such efforts demonstrate Lovell’s commitment to not just building homes but enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.

Looking Ahead

The Benwell Dene project is set to deliver 146 homes for private rent, with ongoing construction ensuring that 120 homes are currently under development. Lovell plans to maintain transparent communication with local residents, minimizing disruption as the project progresses. A work experience program is also underway, offering valuable opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing careers in construction.

As Lovell continues to work on this innovative housing project, the recognition received from the Considerate Constructors Scheme reaffirms the positive impact of their initiatives, proving that thoughtful construction can foster community spirit and improve lives.
