Transforming Dreams into Reality: An Inspirational Tale from the Netherlands

In a heartwarming story emerging from the Netherlands, an 8-year-old girl’s whimsical design has been brought to life on the exterior of a train, showcasing the power of creativity and imagination in children. Hosted by the national train operator NS, the NS Drawing Competition encourages children across the country to contribute their artistic vision for train designs.

A Record-Breaking Participation

The 2025 edition of this unique competition saw a remarkable response, with over 1,200 entries from enthusiastic young artists. The diverse range of submissions included imaginative concepts such as jungle trains filled with friendly animals and fantasy locomotives soaring through the sky. Among these entries, Phileine from Zutphen created the “Sweet Monster Train,” a design that stood out and captured the hearts of the judges.

Bringing Imagination to Life

Phileine’s artwork was not just a piece of paper; it was a vision brought to life with the help of professional illustrator Jip Piet. Together, they transformed the train cars into animated displays of friendly monsters, intentionally designed to be approachable and fun, as they meander along the exterior. This innovative approach allows for the design to be printed on large decal stickers, streamlining the application process without the need for paint.

Celebration of Childhood Wonder

The unveiling of the train took place at Utrecht's Maliebaan station, where Phileine, accompanied by her family, participated in the ceremonial ribbon-cutting. This event underscores NS's mission to inspire children’s love for train travel through creative expression. As stated by NS, “Children often experience a train journey as an adventure, much more than we sometimes realize as adults.” By immersing young minds in their fantasies, the company highlights the special nature of travel through the eyes of a child.

This delightful initiative not only recognizes the creativity of children but also reaffirms the importance of fostering imagination in youth. The “Sweet Monster Train” serves as a reminder that dreams, no matter how fantastical, can become a reality with support, encouragement, and a little bit of creativity.
