Transforming Healing: How Murals Bring Comfort to ICU Patients

In a thoughtful initiative to enhance the healing environment for intensive care patients, AdventHealth DeLand has partnered with local artist Courtney Canova to create a series of uplifting murals. These serene artworks, depicting picturesque scenes of the St. Johns River, are strategically placed outside the ICU, offering a comforting view for those in critical care.

A Vision for Healing Spaces

Hospital president and CEO Khelsea Bauer emphasized the importance of integrating art into healthcare, stating that the murals contribute a "little extra moment of healing beyond just pure clinical care." The initiative aligns with the hospital's mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ and nurturing the mind, body, and spirit of patients and their families.

A Positive Community Impact

The canvases come to life with images of manatees, birds, and tranquil waters, transforming what was once a plain view into a continuous landscape. This artistic enhancement aims to provide patients with a soothing, visually engaging focal point during moments of uncertainty. According to registered nurse Jack Ross, the inspiration for this project was sparked by a shared moment in an employee town hall where the need for such uplifting visuals was highlighted.

Staff and Patient Reactions

The reaction to the murals has been overwhelmingly positive from both the hospital staff and the patients. ICU Nurse Manager Mandy Johnson noted that these artistic elements help shift focus from difficult situations, bringing smiles to those who encounter them. Canova’s intent was to create a calming atmosphere, one that offers a brief escape for patients looking out from their rooms.

A Community-Rich Project

As the murals blend into the beautiful backdrop of DeLand, this initiative not only enriches the lives of the patients but also enhances the community's identity as a place celebrated for its public art. The positive feedback reflects a successful collaboration that highlights the power of art in health care settings, creating an environment that fosters hope and encouragement among those facing challenging times.
