Transforming Summer: Free Sports-Themed Events Ignite a Love for Reading

This summer, families along the Yorkshire Coast have a unique opportunity to combine sports and storytelling at local libraries, engaging their children in reading through fun and interactive events. A three-week program, designed to enhance children's reading habits, is set to captivate young minds with free crafts and sports-themed stories.

A Passion for Sport and Literacy

Initiated by the National Literacy Trust Yorkshire Coast, these events target children up to the age of eleven and aim to foster a love for reading by connecting it with their existing passions for sports. As recent research indicates that only 35.4% of children and young people in the region enjoy reading during their free time, this program stands as a crucial intervention designed to reverse this trend.

Exciting Themes and Free Activities

The program kicks off with a football theme in its first week, featuring engaging activities at Whitby Library, Filey Library, and More Than Books in Eastfield. Subsequent weeks will embrace dance and water sports, with sessions filled with stories, crafts, and fun movement activities. With no pre-booking necessary, families can simply attend and enjoy the sessions—each attending child will also receive a free book to take home.

Community Support and Collaboration

This initiative is bolstered by the collaboration between the National Literacy Trust Yorkshire Coast and North Yorkshire Council, supported by funding from the Woodsmith Foundation. As Helen Williams, Manager for the National Literacy Trust Yorkshire Coast, emphasizes, the goal is to make reading relevant and enjoyable, encouraging children to explore books that resonate with their interests.

Such programs not only enhance literacy but also create opportunities for families to bond over stories and crafts, instilling a deeper appreciation for reading that could last a lifetime. With a variety of themes and engaging activities, the Summer of Sport and Stories is a perfect avenue for children to discover the joy of reading this summer.
