Transforming Whiterock: A New Era for Community Living and Children's Services
An exciting new project in Belfast is set to transform the Whiterock area, having recently received approval from the Belfast City Council for a significant development combining social housing with a new children's centre. This development marks an important milestone in enhancing the community and providing vital services to families.
Revitalization of a Long-Derelict Site
The project will breathe new life into the former Belfast Metropolitan College campus, a site that has long been neglected. Construction is already underway on the initial phase, which consists of 62 social housing units provided by Newpark Homes. The newly approved plans include an additional 77 social housing units, comprised of a mix of 26 houses and 51 apartments, alongside a state-of-the-art Whiterock Children's Centre.
Community Impact and Development Goals
Deirdre Walsh, Director of the Whiterock Children's Centre, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the approval, emphasizing the project's importance to the local community. After five years of planning, the project aims to create an integrated living environment where family homes are developed alongside essential community services. "This is massive for the Whiterock area," said Walsh, highlighting the positive change that the project will usher in for local residents.
A Bright Future Ahead
West Belfast MP Paul Maskey echoed Walsh's sentiments, noting the tremendous benefits this development will bring. "Now that the planning application has been approved, it is full throttle ahead," he stated. This investment is not only seen as a step towards improved housing but also as a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for families in the area.
This ambitious project stands as a testament to the hard work of local leaders and the community’s desire for revitalization. As construction progresses, the Whiterock area looks forward to a future enriched with accessible housing and vital services for its families.
