Unlocking Opportunities: Major Funding Initiative for UK Horticulture

A collaboration between the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and the British Ornamentals Association (BOA) is set to inject more than £334,000 into the UK environmental horticulture sector over the next three years. This initiative, known as the AHDB Funds Scheme for ornamentals, represents a significant step forward for UK growers, especially in challenging economic conditions.

Support for Collective Growth

As UK growers navigate one of the toughest business environments seen in decades, the release of these grants is being hailed as a vital lifeline. The funds, derived from the remaining balances of horticulture levy payments, will be administered through a competitive bidding process aimed at supporting initiatives that provide collective benefits to growers across the UK.

Investment in Future Projects

Grants will be available for a variety of purposes, including research, development, grower events, and market development initiatives. David Denny, Director of Research & Knowledge Transfer at HTA, emphasized the importance of this funding to help support growth in production, stating that it builds upon existing programs aimed at enhancing research and development capabilities within the industry.

A Call for Collaboration

Robin Squance, Chair of the BOA Technical Committee, expressed optimism about the new funding model, which aims to allow nurseries to tap into legacy AHDB funds. He encourages growers to submit project proposals that will foster innovation and sustainability within UK horticulture.

With funding allocated across three key sectors—live ornamentals plant production, bulb production, and cut flower production—this scheme aims to ensure comprehensive support for diverse horticultural activities. The distribution of funds reflects a strategic approach, targeting areas that promise significant collective advancement.

As applications begin, this initiative not only highlights the resilience of the UK horticulture sector but also reaffirms the collaborative spirit among organizations working towards common goals. With such strong support behind them, UK growers are poised to enhance their operations and make significant strides in environmental horticulture.
