A recent UK-wide study has highlighted the incredible impact of positive communication between teachers and students, showing that over 90% of young people feel more motivated and engaged in school when they receive supportive feedback from their educators. The Importance of Positive Relationships
The findings from this extensive study, which surveyed more than 1,000 young individuals and 600 secondary school teachers, revealed that fostering strong teacher-student relationships could be a pivotal strategy for enhancing school attendance and student engagement. Young participants noted qualities such as patience, fairness, and respect as essential for creating an environment where they feel valued and encouraged to excel.
Challenges in Communication
Despite the promising outlook on positive interactions, the study also underscored significant challenges. A quarter of the surveyed students reported negative experiences with harsh words from teachers, a factor that contributed to diminished attendance, particularly among students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This juxtaposition underscores the necessity for educational institutions to focus on cultivating nurturing communication practices.
Supporting Educators in Their Roles
Teachers themselves expressed a strong belief in the importance of building positive relationships, with 76% indicating that it is a central aspect of their work. However, many cited workload and curriculum pressures as barriers to maintaining these valuable connections. The report suggests that education policies must evolve to prioritize training that emphasizes verbal communication and empathy, enabling teachers to effectively support their students' emotional well-being.
