Volunteer Opportunity: Join the Fight Against Drowning in Kenton-on-Sea!

As we head into 2026, the Sunshine Coast Survival Swimming Programme is making strides to ensure the safety of local children in Kenton-on-Sea by teaching vital water safety skills. This community-driven initiative is not only making a difference but is also in search of passionate volunteers to help expand its reach.

A Community Response to a Tragedy

The programme was established in late 2023 after a tragic drowning incident on New Year's Eve claimed the lives of four young individuals. In response, the community came together to create this life-saving initiative aimed at preventing further tragedies. Over the past year, the programme has seen incredible success, with hundreds of students participating in swimming lessons designed to prepare them for real-life water challenges.

Achievements and Future Goals

Throughout 2024, the Sunshine Coast Survival Swimming Programme hosted 21 sessions, resulting in dozens of children learning essential survival swimming skills. Recently, advanced learners celebrated a milestone by swimming in the Kariega River, where they tackled the complexities of managing currents and navigating uneven riverbeds. The culmination of their hard work was marked by the awarding of certificates to seven proud students!

Join the Movement

The programme is now in urgent need of more volunteers to sustain its critical work. “We depend on volunteer instructors to reduce the risk of drowning in our community,” a programme member stated. They are calling for confident swimmers who have a few afternoons free each month to step forward. Training is provided at no cost, making this a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a vital cause.

If you or someone you know is passionate about water safety, consider joining this impactful effort. By volunteering, you can help instill life-saving skills in the next generation and contribute to a safer community.
