Wembley Stadium Honors Heroic Fans with Temporary Stand Names

In a remarkable initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of CPR, Wembley Stadium has announced that its stands will be temporarily named after four extraordinary football fans who have demonstrated incredible courage in the face of life-threatening situations. This gesture coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Sky Bet EFL Play-Offs, a competition that has captured the hearts of football fans for generations.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Each of the four stands will honor a unique story of survival, reminding attendees and viewers alike of the critical role that immediate action plays in saving lives. With approximately 200,000 fans expected to attend the events between May 23 and 25, and millions more watching from home, this initiative spreads a powerful message about the lifesaving skill of CPR.

The Lives Behind the Names

The stands will be named after:

  • The Callum Lawson Stand: Dedicated to a Sunderland fan who survived a cardiac arrest during last year’s Championship Play-Off Final.
  • The Pippa Sharman Stand: Recognizing a Reading supporter who helped save the life of an opponent after a harrowing incident following a match.
  • The Andy Wall Stand: In honor of a Norwich City fan who collapsed during a game but was saved thanks to prompt CPR intervention.
  • The Ed McCann Stand: Named after a Bradford City fan who managed to survive a cardiac arrest with help from another fan who acted swiftly.

Every Minute Matters Initiative

This stand naming is part of the Sky Bet and British Heart Foundation's (BHF) Every Minute Matters initiative, aimed at encouraging football fans to learn CPR. Over half a million fans have already engaged with the BHF’s free RevivR tool to learn the vital skill. This proactive approach to saving lives highlights how crucial every moment is during a cardiac emergency.

Championing Change

Tom Lockyer, an ambassador for the Every Minute Matters campaign and a player who survived a cardiac arrest on the pitch, has voiced his support for this initiative. “Wembley will always hold huge meaning for me,” he stated, emphasizing the emotional significance of honoring those who have faced similar challenges. Lockyer's experiences underline the transformative power of football in uniting people for a critical cause.

Taking Action

As passion for the game ignites a call to action, fans are encouraged to take just 15-minutes to learn CPR through resources provided by the BHF. Whether a supporter or a casual observer, everyone has the opportunity to become a lifesaver.

This commendable effort not only honors individual stories of survival but also serves as a rallying cry for communities to come together and equip themselves with knowledge that can make a life-saving difference. The initiative is a testament to the impact sports can have, nurturing connections and promoting health awareness within society.
