West Devon Celebrates Community Heroes at Inspiring Mayoral Awards
In a heartfelt ceremony earlier this year, the Mayoral Awards shone a spotlight on the remarkable individuals and organizations that contribute to the vibrant community spirit in West Devon. The event, driven by a commitment to recognizing those who make a difference, celebrated the tireless efforts of local heroes during a ceremony that drew attention to the significance of volunteerism across the borough.
A Tribute to Dedication and Compassion
The Mayor of West Devon, Paul Vachon, took center stage to commend both the winners and nominees for their unwavering commitment to community service. “In West Devon, we are blessed with so many people and groups with foresight, empathy, and dedication to help and support our communities,” he stated, highlighting the importance of public recognition for those who often work behind the scenes.
Standout Achievements
Among the celebrated heroes was Barnaby Ryder, who earned the Under 18s award for an impressive solo swim across the Channel, raising over £5,000 for the ManUp? Charity to raise awareness about men's mental health. His accomplishment stands as a beacon of inspiration for young individuals in the community.
Community Spirit Recognized
Other commendable winners included Tracey Gyllenship for her dedicated support to those living with fibromyalgia, along with Roy Young, who was lauded for his long-standing contributions to community life in Horrabridge. The awards also embraced organizations that make a difference, such as the Drewe Arms Community Pub Committee, celebrated for saving the historic pub as a community hub.
Environmental and Longevity Honors
Environmental efforts did not go unnoticed, as Pam Pemberton received the Mayor’s Green Award for establishing the Greatfield Hedgehog Rescue, a sanctuary that cares for sick and injured hedgehogs while promoting volunteerism. Additionally, Edwina Hill and Robin Hill were honored with the Long Service Award for their over forty years of dedication to local charities and village life.
The Mayoral Awards served as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that community involvement has on the lives of residents in West Devon, showcasing the profound difference that kindness and dedication can make.
