This year marks a significant achievement for several local beaches as they have been re-awarded the coveted Blue Flag status and Seaside Awards for 2026. These accolades from Keep Britain Tidy endorse the commitment to maintaining high environmental and safety standards at these coastal locations. Additionally, a new outdoor bathing spot has been designated in Northumberland by the Environment Agency, further enhancing the appeal of the region’s beaches.

Whitley Bay Leads the Pack

A recent study by LNER highlighted Whitley Bay as the premier beach across England and Scotland, achieving the highest score of 69 out of 100. The beach is celebrated not only for its scenic views and vibrant local wildlife but also for its rich history and revitalized architecture, epitomized by landmarks like the Spanish City and the iconic lighthouse. With 13 nearby fish and chip shops, visitors have ample opportunity to indulge in traditional seaside fare.

Stellar Rankings for Local Beaches

Following closely behind, Tynemouth Longsands and South Shields Beach claimed the second and third spots in the rankings, respectively. Tynemouth is particularly notable for its stunning landscape and renowned surfing conditions, creating an ideal backdrop for both relaxation and adventure. Simultaneously, South Shields wowed with its family-friendly attractions, including the celebrated Ocean Beach Pleasure Park.

One of the most significant factors highlighted in the LNER study is the ease of access to these stunning beaches via train connections. David Flesher, commercial director at LNER, emphasized that a trip to the coast offers a welcome escape, free from the common hassles of traffic and parking.
